This is an epic voyage of discovery aboard the Ocean Endeavour. Follow in the footsteps of Shackleton to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands. Cruise from Ushuaia, through the Beagle Channel and into one of the most famous stretches of water, the Drake Passage. Setting course for the Antarctic Peninsula we will sail past amazing views of completely white mountains, huge floating icebergs and the chance to see breaching whales. Your Antarctica cruise ship will land at the South Shetlands and the Antarctica Peninsula. Take zodiac expeditions to explore mountains, glaciers, imposing icebergs, ice-strewn waters and abundance of wildlife.
Shakelton's infamous voyage becomes reality on this Antarctica cruise as we visit Elephant Island en route to South Georgia. South Georgia is the final resting place of the eminent explorer, Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton, following the destruction of The Endurance that was crushed by pack ice in the Weddell Sea.
As we reach South Georgia, sometimes referred to the Galapagos of the south, you will be stunned by a massive concentration of wildlife including the worlds largest king penguin colony. The wildlife does not stop there as we continue the cruise to the Falkland islands to explore many of the islands and wildlife in the archipelago.
From Ushuaia to Ushuaia
Day 1 Ushuaia, Argentina
On arrival at Ushuaia airport, you will be greeted by our representative who will be happily holding a sign with your name on it. You will be taken to your hotel where you have free time to explore the town. If you're feeling outdoorsy we would suggest taking the Fin del Mundo Train (End of the World Train); a steam train that runs from Ushuaia to Tierra del Fuego National Park. Or alternatively, visit the Museo Marítimo y del Presidio de Ushuaia, that has four museums in one!
Day 2 Embarkation in Ushuaia
You have the morning to carry on exploring Ushuaia. In the late afternoon, you will be transferred to the pier and onto the Ocean Endeavor where you will be welcomed aboard by the expedition team.
We then set sail through the dramatic beagle channel. Keep your eyes peeled for Magellanic penguins, rock cormorants, petrels and black-browed albatross from the deck as well as sea lion colonies.
A hearty welcome dinner is served for you tonight as you experience your first night at sea.
Day 3-4 At Sea
You will spend the next few days at sea, cruising one of the most famous stretches of water in the world, The Drake Passage. This part of the journey can be a little choppy but thats all part of the adventure. During these days at sea you can get to know people on board, see some engaging presentations on Antarctica's geology, wildlife and history and maybe relax in the cruise ships jacuzzi.
You will probably notice the temperature drop as your Antarctica cruise crosses the Antarctic Convergence. At this point, colder and warmer waters meet which pushes nutrient rich waters to the surface. Look out for whales and other animals enjoying a hearty meal.
Depending on conditions, we will make landfall by early evening on day 4 with the sight of the South Shetland Islands.
Day 5-8 South Shetlands -> Antarctica
Your land-based expeditions begin as we explore dramatic mountains, ice-strewn waters and meet the local wildlife. Every day will bring different adventures to your Antarctic cruise as you sale through towering icebergs, explore remote bays with great sightings of penguin rookeries, seal and bird colonies. We also know some whale feeding areas to visit for the best chances to see different species breaching. This is a perfect opportunity to try out kayaking, snowshoeing and photography workshops.
Your Antarctica cruise will continue its mission through the Peninsula with multiple daily excursions, interesting lectures and unbelievable Antarctic views that can be enjoyed on deck. After your time off the ship exploring Antarctica, you can warm up in the jacuzzi and saunas.
Day 9 Elephant Island & At Sea
Today we say goodbye to the Antarctica Peninsula and point the Antarctic cruise towards the Elephant Island. This is where the crew of Shakeltons Trans-Antarctic Expedition took refuge following the loss of The Endurance, their expedition ship. The crew waited for Shakelton to return after he sailed with 5 other men to South Georgia.
Day 9-11 At Sea
Your Antarctica cruise heads northeast towards South Georgia. Watch out for whales and listen to engaging talks from our onboard experts. This is an excellent opportunity to completely unwind and treat yourself to a spa.
Day 12-13 South Georgia
We make land at South Georgia to explore one of the most beautiful places on earth with its emerald green bays, snow-covered peaks and blue glacier ice. Here you will witness one of the world’s most significant wildlife areas. South Georgia is home to over 30 million breeding birds, thousands of seals, wandering albatross and the largest colony of king penguins.
South Georgia also has some interesting history, playing a part in Shakelton's expedition and was once the centre of the whaling industry. There will be opportunities to explore South Georgia by Zodiac, kayak and on foot. Hike to viewpoints across beaches littered with elephant seals, visit the remains of abandoned whaling stations and also the grave of Shackleton himself.
Day 14-16 At Sea
The Ocean Endeavour will leave South Georgia behind for the rugged and isolated Falkland Islands. There will be plenty of presentations to enjoy and lots of time to relax in the spa.
Day 17-18 Falkland Islands
The Falkland Islands offers a huge abundance of wildlife, a paradise for birdwatchers and photographers. There are five species of penguin on the Falklands and vast numbers of albatrosses and elephant seals. The marine wildlife includes orcas, Peale's and Commerson's dolphins.
There will be a little bit of flexibility due to the weather when visiting the Falklands, but we will make daily zodiac excursions and go for hikes. Hopefully, we will have a window to visit Carcass Island, West Point Island, Pebble Island and go for excellent walks at Grave Cove. On these islands, we will likely see rockhopper penguins, the black-browed albatross, king penguins, giant petrels and the largest breeding colony of southern elephant seals in the archipelago.
Your Antarctic cruise will visit Port Stanley with colourful houses, a waterfront promenade and English-style pubs.
Day 20 At Sea
We will depart the Falklands as your Antarctic cruise comes to an end and we head towards Ushuaia. Our final leg of the voyage is along the mountain-fringed Beagle Channel to Tierra del Fuego.
Day 21 Disembarkation in Ushuaia
We are scheduled to arrive into Ushuaia early this morning, disembarking after a final breakfast aboard the Ocean Endeavour. You will then be transferred to the airport, or you can continue your adventures into Patagonia to explore Torres del Paine or take to the greatest walking trails in the world in El Chalten.
